Packaging Development Manager

Consumer and industrial products manufacturer running rigid plastic, dispensing, and aerosol packaging programs

Home · Open Roles · Packaging Development Manager

Own rigid plastic and aerosol packaging from blank sheet to production floor — bottles, closures, pumps, trigger sprayers, valves, and actuators. This is a builder's seat: tooling development and mold qualification run directly with the suppliers, validation protocols you write yourself, and the failure investigations when a package leaks or a valve underperforms at pressure. Aerosol depth is the differentiator here — plenty of packaging engineers can develop a bottle; far fewer have run propellant compatibility and pressurized package testing. Best fit for an engineer who wants the technical ownership and a small team to bring along.

What you’ll own

  • Develop bottles, containers, jars, closures, pumps, trigger sprayers, and applicators from concept through commercialization
  • Develop aerosol packaging systems — cans, valves, actuators, and overcaps — including propellant compatibility and pressurized package performance
  • Select polymers and packaging substrates (HDPE, PP, PET, LDPE, ABS, SAN, nylon) against product compatibility, performance, and manufacturability requirements
  • Drive tooling development, mold qualification, and design for manufacturing (DFM) with injection molding, extrusion blow molding, and injection stretch blow molding suppliers
  • Run package validation and performance testing: drop, leak, transportation, pressure and burst, product compatibility, environmental conditioning, and shelf-life
  • Author engineering specifications, package drawings, and validation protocols
  • Lead technical reviews, design evaluations, tooling approvals, and production readiness with domestic and international suppliers and contract manufacturers
  • Lead root cause analysis and failure investigations on packaging and manufacturing line issues
  • Deliver cost reduction, material optimization, lightweighting, and value engineering results across the packaging portfolio
  • Advance sustainable packaging — post-consumer recycled (PCR) content, recyclable structures, and refill systems
  • Keep packaging compliant with aerosol, transportation, quality, and package safety requirements
  • Mentor packaging engineers and support manufacturing through line trials, launches, and continuous improvement work

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Plastics or Polymer Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related technical discipline
  • 7+ years of packaging development experience
  • Hands-on development experience in rigid plastic packaging and/or aerosol packaging
  • Working knowledge of injection molding, extrusion blow molding (EBM), injection stretch blow molding (ISBM), and aerosol packaging manufacturing processes
  • Demonstrated ownership of tooling development, mold qualification, package validation, and production start-up
  • Track record managing multiple concurrent projects across product development, manufacturing, procurement, quality, and marketing
  • Experience working with domestic and international packaging suppliers
  • Preferred: CPG, personal care, beauty, household products, industrial, healthcare, pharmaceutical, or automotive chemical packaging
  • Preferred: aerosol valve and actuator selection, propellant compatibility, and transportation requirements for pressurized packaging systems
  • Preferred: ASTM, ISTA, ISO, and other packaging performance standards
  • Preferred: CAD proficiency in SolidWorks, Creo, or AutoCAD
  • Preferred: Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or Project Management certification
