We looked at what actually brings people to ethoslinkadvisory.com from search. We expected "executive search firm" and "recruiter." We found comparisons.
This is a small site and a small sample, so treat it as a signal and not a study. Between August 1 and October 30, 2026, our Search Console showed 130 impressions for "ai consultant vs fractional head of ai," 30 for "ai operating partner vs fractional caio," 79 for "chief marketing officer fractional," 26 for "advisory board fractional," and a handful for "what's the difference between a fractional executive and an interim." The searches for generic executive search terms were weaker. "Charlotte executive search" drew 33 impressions and "charlotte executive recruiters" 23. A large share of the rest of the long tail was job seekers looking for jobs, not buyers.
Search impressions for "ai consultant vs fractional head of ai" in three months, the most-seen query on the site in the period. A buyer comparing two models before choosing a vendor.
Google Search Console, ethoslinkadvisory.com, August 1 to October 30, 2026What that tells us
The people asking these questions have not chosen a model. They are standing at the decision before the decision: do I need a consultant or a leader, an interim or a part-timer, a search or an advisory board. By the time they call a search firm they have usually answered it, with or without help.
The supply side is moving the same way. Russam, a UK interim firm, reported on June 23, 2026 that 55% of its interim executives took a fractional role in the past 12 months, up from 46% a year earlier, and that it now sees almost as many fractional assignments as traditional interim ones. That is one firm's community, mostly in the UK, but it explains why the question keeps appearing.
Five comparisons, answered plainly
These are our answers, from our work. They are not statistics.
| The comparison | The short answer |
|---|---|
| AI consultant vs fractional head of AI | A consultant delivers a plan or a project and leaves. A fractional head owns results several days a week. Hire the consultant for a question, the fractional leader for an outcome. |
| Fractional vs interim | Fractional is part-time and ongoing, for a need below full-time scale. Interim is full-time and temporary, for a vacancy. |
| Fractional CMO vs full-time CMO | Fractional fits direction, a plan and a small team. Full-time fits a large team and daily brand ownership. |
| Advisory board vs fractional executive | An advisory board gives you perspective a few times a year. A fractional executive does the work. Choose the board if the problem is judgment and the fractional leader if it is execution. |
| Contingent vs retained search | Contingent sells candidates for a fee on placement. Retained sells a managed process and a decision you can defend. We cover it in a separate comparison. |
The first two have longer answers on this site. Our AI consultant versus fractional head of AI piece covers when each fits, and the four-model comparison covers time, duration, control and cost.
Most of the work in a leadership decision happens before anyone is hired. It is choosing what to buy.
What we will do with this
Three changes follow from what we saw. We will write for the comparison, because that is where the buyer is. We will say plainly when the answer is not a search, because that is what the question deserves. And we will keep measuring: the same report, every week, to see which comparisons grow.
If you are standing at the decision before the decision, tell us the seat. We will say which one we think it is, even if the answer is not a search.
